I was born in Racine, Wisconsin on February 16 and have very
fond memories growing up right there near Lake Michigan,
about a mile from our house, and the Root River almost in
our back yard.
With Detroit Michigan across the lake, I grew up listening
to the "Motown" sound with the likes of The Temptations, The
Supremes, Smokie Robinson and the Miracles, Junior Walker
and the All Stars, The Jackson 5, The Four Tops and many,
many others.
Back in that day as a child my parents - specifically my Mom
- used to pay (bribe) my Brothers and Sisters to
dance-perform to the music they would play on our big wooden
floor-model stereo (you know the ones with the 45 rpm disc
changers in them) for their Friday and Saturday night guest
who would come over to play cards, listen to music and
socialize. My younger Brother Donnie was the best dancer and
always got most of the money. He was a show off, too. :)
Quite
a few years back, it was on a beautiful Wisconsin autumn day
- I was a college freshman attending the University of
Wisconsin - Milwaukee - that my older Brother said to
me, "Hey Ronnie, check out this song." The song he played on
his old Akai reel-to-reel tape deck was entitled "Renaissance" by
violinist Jean Luc Ponty featuring Patrice "Baby Fingers"
Rushen. From that day forward, I was hooked on Smooth Jazz.
There is nothing like it to
work by, to play by, to relax by, to think by and to live
by.
